Robert Greenleaf is a retired Auburn University professor emeritus of music and a composer. He grew up around plants, and even before building on his lot, began planting azaleas. Eventually, he made connections with other notable Auburn azalea aficionados R O'Neal Smitherman, Dennis Rouse and Tom Corley. They introduced him to hybridizing azaleas.
